Amerikalı sessiz dönem yönetmenlerinden.1912’de aktör olarak başladığı Sinema mesleğinde ,asistanlıktan yönetmenliğe hızla terfi etti. Bazı filmlerinden 1935’’Dangereous’’ Bette Davis Oscar kazandı.1946 ‘’The Jolson Story’’ renkli çekildi,7 dalda aday gösterilen film 2 dalda OSCAR kazandı. 1948 ‘’Four Faces West’’Dokunaklı  Western öyküsü iyi bilinen filmlerindendir.

Çok üretken bir yönetmen olarak,sessiz dönem dahil,1954 yılına kadar, 117 film yaptı.1960 yılında Hollywood Bulvarına Yıldızı kondu.
